About the Role
We are looking for a passionate Character Designer to help shape the visual identity of Lance Commander. This is a volunteer position — we are an early-stage indie studio with no funding yet, but a lot of heart and a clear vision. If our project resonates with you, this is a chance to leave your mark from day one.
Responsibilities
Lance Commander is a browser and mobile strategy game set in the BattleTech universe. We are building something that respects both the tabletop roots of the IP and the players' time. Art is central to that vision — and right now, we are looking for someone to help define what our characters look like.
As our Character Designer, you would:
Design original characters in the universe of Lance Commander — mercenary commanders, faction representatives, crew members, and NPCs
Work closely with the game direction to ensure visual consistency with the BattleTech aesthetic while bringing your own style
Propose character sheets, expression sets, and costume/equipment variations
Contribute to the studio's visual identity from the ground up
Because we are at the very beginning of this adventure, your work will shape the artistic direction of the entire project — not just fill a slot.
Requirements
Genuine passion for character design — we care about drive more than a diploma
A portfolio that demonstrates your style (published projects, personal work, fan art — all valid)
Comfort with science-fiction and/or military aesthetics
Ability to work independently and propose ideas, not just execute briefs
Basic English communication (our team language is English)
Important: As part of the application process, we ask for a character design sample. This sample remains entirely your intellectual property until — and unless — you formally agree to join the studio. Its only purpose is to assess whether your visual style aligns with what we are building. We will never use it without your explicit consent.
Nice to Have
Familiarity with the BattleTech or MechWarrior universe
Experience with character design for games (concept art, sprite work, portraits)
Interest in growing into a paid role as the studio secures funding
Experience collaborating remotely on creative projects
